The CNC Division specializes in machine work involving large
production runs of the same part. Normal orders range from
25 parts to 1,000 parts but larger orders can be accommodated.
CNC Equipment that is available includes milling machines,
lathes, and EDM machines.
Programmers transform a drawing of the part into a computer
program that is downloaded into the CNC machine computer.
The computer controls a tool center containing various tooling
such as drill bits, milling bits, turning tools, etc. to perform
sequential machining operations on the same part. The computer
controls allow manufacturing identical parts in large numbers
very efficiently with a high degree of accuracy.
Experienced machinists handle the raw material, finished
parts and monitor the operation of the equipment. A Quality
Control Technician checks the parts to ensure they conform
to the dimensions and meet the tolerances set forth by the
drawings and specifications.
Machine Shop
The machine shop has approximately 25,000 square feet of
building space devoted to all types of precision metal working
machines such as lathes, milling machines, drill presses,
etc. The machine shop employs over twenty experienced machinists
who produce custom parts made of carbon steel as well as alloy
materials such as stainless steel, exotic specialty steel
alloys, and engineered plastics.
Employing over twenty experienced craftsman, the fabrication
shop manufactures a variety of components, usually employing
welding, from structural steel shapes, round and flat shapes,
and other raw materials. AWS certified welders employ all
types of welding methods to produce parts. The fabrication
shop also contains a sheet metal shop that produces an array
of sheet metal products such as ductwork, machine guards,
etc.

Paint Shop
SMF has a sandblasting area that is capable of producing
finishes to all SSPC standards. SMF's painters employ various
painting techniques including spray painting to produce a
variety of finishes in a range of coatings including epoxies
and other industrial coatings. SMF has recently installed
a 22,000 sq. ft. climate controlled paint booth. Allied sub-suppliers
produce hot dip galvanized finishes, a well as metal plating
and other exotic finishes.
Assembly Area
SMF personnel are skilled in assembling machined parts and
purchased items to produce complete working machines. The
assembly area is equipped with electrical power allowing most
machines to be test run. Closely allied sub-suppliers program
PLC and computer controls if required.
Raw Materials
SMF keeps a large supply of structural steel, flat plate,
sheet metal, bar stock and other materials in different grades
of carbon steel, alloy steel, and other materials. If materials
are not in stock they can be obtained from suppliers in Atlanta
and Chattanooga within one day. Materials are cut using the
latest automatic saws and electric eye flame cutting tables. |
